First-year Flame Kyle Mitchell threw a personal-best 59-2.75 to win the Bobcat Invitational men's shot put crown.
Liberty sophomore Kyle Mitchell captured the Bobcat Invitational men's shot put title on Saturday, thanks to a personal-best 59-2.75 effort on his sixth and final attempt.
The only Flame to compete in San Marcos this weekend, Mitchell produced a then season-best mark of 57-10.25 in round four. However, he needed a big final round throw to overtake North Dakota State's Michael Keogan for the victory.
Mitchell added 10 inches to his previous personal best of 58-4.5, established last season while competing for Kansas State. He now ranks No. 3 on Liberty's all-time list after becoming only the third Flame ever to exceed 18 meters (18.05 to be exact) outdoors.
The Jamaica native joins some elite company, as only 20 NCAA Division I men's shot putters had heaved the shot put 18 meters this season, entering the weekend.
Saturday's competition marked only the fifth time Mitchell has thrown the shot put in a Liberty uniform. He has recorded top-five finishes during all five competitions but this marked his first victory as a Flame.
