Liberty Lady Flames Lacrosse to Take on Elon Phoenix on Saturday Afternoon

Liberty women's lacrosse is set for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday against the visiting Elon Phoenix at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.

Liberty enters the contest with a 2-1 record, featuring road victories over Lehigh (15-5, Feb. 9) and Winthrop (10-5, last Friday). The Lady Flames dropped their home opener to No. 20 Notre Dame by a 14-10 score.

Meanwhile, Elon is 2-1 on the season. The Phoenix defeated Campbell (15-5, Feb. 9) on the road and lost to No. 14 Virginia (11-4, last Saturday) in their home opener. On Wednesday night at home, Elon defeated Winthrop 23-4.

Saturday's game between the two schools will be the third all-time meeting. The series is even at 1-1, with Elon winning the most recent matchup, 13-8 on March 28, 2015 in Elon, N.C. The Lady Flames captured the first-ever meeting, a 13-9 decision on Feb. 21, 2014 in Lynchburg.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • The Lady Flames swept the ASUN weekly honors, this week. Junior midfielder Carly White was named ASUN Lacrosse Player of the Week, and senior midfielder Brianna McCaffrey was selected as the ASUN Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. Liberty has now received three of the four weekly honors in the first two weeks of the season.
  • Liberty senior attacker Kayla Foster established a new program record with her 188th career point in last Sunday's home opener against No. 20 Notre Dame. Foster's four-point effort (1 g, 3 a) put her in first place all-time. Her second half assist gave her 188 career points
  • Lady Flames goalkeeper Katherine Widrick, last week's ASUN Defensive Player of the Week, is 2-1 on the season with an 8.00 goals-against-average, which ranks 25th best in the NCAA. She is No. 12 in the nation in saves (29) and No. 21 in save percentage (.547).
  • Liberty enters Saturday's contest scoring 11.67 goals per game and allowing only 8.00 goals per game, good for No. 20 in the nation in scoring defense.
  • In 2018, Liberty led the nation in caused turnovers per game and was second in the country in ground balls per game. In 2019, the Lady Flames currently rank 12th in the country in caused turnovers (15.33) and tied for 32nd in ground balls (22.00).
  • Through four games, the Lady Flames feature eight players with three or more points, led by White (nine points). White and fellow junior Jenna Joyal share the team lead with seven goals, while Foster paces the squad with four assists.
  • In the early portion of the season, Liberty has seen a dramatic improvement in free-position percentage. The Lady Flames are scoring on 60 percent of their free-position chances, good for fifth best in the country. A year ago, Liberty finished 79th in the country (38 percent) in that category.
  • Freshman Hope Flack leads the Lady Flames with 14 draw controls through three contests and is first in the ASUN in draw controls per game (4.67).
