Thoughts From Head Coach Jeff Maren
"Hats off to VCU for playing well. It wasn't out day today, but we are looking forward to working on our games this week in preparation for Arizona."

How It Happened

  • Liberty got off to a promising start by winning two of three matches to lead, 1-0. The Lady Flames' top pairing, Lara Soares and Maria Medina, scored a 6-4 victory over the Rams' Anna Rasmussen and Melissa Ifidzhen. VCU's Paola Delgado and Kanako Yano (No. 2 doubles) evened up the doubles session at 1-apiece with a 6-3 decision over Liberty's sophomore duo of Grace Hashiguchi and Nasha Ghajar.
  • The match on court three between seniors Ashley Bongart and Anna Dollar (Liberty) and Marina Alcaide Bakkari and Noumea Witmus (VCU) decided the doubles point. Bongart and Dollar collected their team-best fourth doubles victory of the spring, 6-4.
  • VCU singles victories at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 1 singles, in that order, gave the third straight triumph. At No. 3 singles, Alcaide Bakkari won in straight sets over Bongart (6-2, 6-1) evening the match at 1-1. Yano of VCU topped Hashiguchi of Liberty in two sets (6-1, 6-1), giving VCU its first lead of the day, 2-1.
  • The No. 5 singles match between Ifidzhen (VCU) and Almborg (Liberty) went to Ifidzhen in two sets, 6-3, 7-5. No. 56 Delgado defeated Soares in straight sets (6-3, 7-6 (6)) despite trailing for much of the second set. Delgado, who won the singles main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by Liberty in the fall, provided VCU its match-clinching fourth point with that victory.
  • The two teams split the last two matches on court (No. 2 singles, No. 6 singles). Medina of the Lady Flames bested the Rams' Rasmussen in come-from-behind fashion, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, for her team-leading 14th singles victory of the 2018-19 campaign. VCU's Witmus
  • VCU is now 2-0 all-time against Liberty.

Next Up

  • Liberty will head to Arizona for a pair of matches over spring break. The Lady Flames will first take on Grand Canyon (March 12), followed by another road match at Arizona (March 14).
  • This is the first time Liberty will face both Arizona and Grand Canyon.
