Liberty and Rutgers opened the 2019 Texas A&M Invitational with a pitchers' duel that the Lady Flames took by a 2-1 score, Friday at Davis Diamond.
Liberty improves its season record to 2-4, snapping a four-game winless streak, while the Scarlet Knights' record levels at 3-3.
Scoring Summary LIBERTY – 3rd INNING – Kara Canetto singles to left, advances to second on the throw, Kaitlin McFarland and Amber Bishop score, 2-0. RUTGERS – 5th INNING – Anyssa Iliopoulos homers to left, 2-1 Notable Numbers - Both teams managed just three hits, while Rutgers committed the game's lone error. - Julia DiMartino (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits, striking out seven and walking one. After giving up a leadoff double in the first, she retired the next 12 batters in a row. - Whitney Jones (2-2) drew the loss, giving up two unearned runs on three hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. - Autumn Bishop went 2-for-2 for the Lady Flames, while Canetto batted 1-for-3 with two RBI. - All three of Rutgers' hits went for extra bases, as Jess Hughes and Nicole Bowman both doubled and Iliopoulos hit her fourth homer of the season.
Turning Point - With nobody on and one out in a scoreless game in the third inning, McFarland sent a drive to left that was dropped by the left fielder. A groundout sent her to third. Amber Bishop was then walked before stealing second.
- Canetto then laced a two-run single to left, breaking a scoreless tie.
- Iliopooulos led off the fifth with a homer, trimming the deficit in half to 2-1. Bowman followed with a double, but DiMartino retired nine out of the next 10 batters to close out the victory.
Beyond the Box Score - Liberty is now 3-1 all-time against Rutgers all-time in softball, and the Lady Flames have won the last three meetings. - Prior to today, Liberty's last win over a Big Ten school was March 11, 2011, when the Lady Flames defeated Iowa, 3-1, in DeLand, Fla. - Coming into today's game, Rutgers led the nation with 2.60 home runs per game. - DiMartino picked up her 70th career victory, becoming the sixth active pitcher in NCAA Division I softball with 70 or more victories. The senior has appeared in each of Liberty's first six games this season.
- Amber Bishop scored her 101st career run, tying Sonja Keith (1996-99) for 15th place in program history in career runs scored. Up Next Liberty will take on No. 19 Texas A&M at 4 p.m. ET this afternoon to continue the Texas A&M Invitational.
