Liberty garnered a pair of ASUN weekly awards on Wednesday as Felix Kandie was named ASUN Men's Freshman of the Week and Delaney McDowell shared the ASUN Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor with Lipscomb's Courtney Brenner.
Kandie is now a two-time ASUN Men's Freshman of the Week after previously earning the honor on Jan. 30. Meanwhile, the award marked McDowell's first ASUN recognition of the season.
A redshirt freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, Kandie was the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational men's 3K champion on Saturday. A personal-best and IC4A-qualifying time of 8:16.44 enabled Kandie to outduel All-American teammate Azaria Kirwa and 2018 NCAA national steeplechase qualifier Tom Nobles of Charlotte for the victory. Kandie ranks No. 2 on the ASUN men's 3K list this season and now sits No. 6 in program history after Saturday's performance.
Running her specialty event (women's 800) for the first time during her senior season on Friday, McDowell raced to a sixth-place finish at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Mason, Ohio native clocked an indoor personal-best time of 2:08.27, which ranks No. 1 in the ASUN and No. 46 nationally for 2019. McDowell has now qualified for the ECAC meet in four different events, also including the 1,000, mile and 4 x 400 relay.
After taking a weekend off from competition, Liberty will play host to the 2019 ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 22-23 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
