Thoughts From Head Coach Derek Schwandt
"Congrats to Josh on pulling out a tough three-setter. Penn played well tonight. We are thankful for the opportunity and saw areas of our games to sharpen. We will keep putting in the good work on the practice court tomorrow."

How It Happened

  • The Quakers took control from the start of the match, winning all three doubles bouts. Penn's Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu, the 56th-ranked duo in the nation, clinched the doubles point on court two with a 6-2 decision over Flames freshmen Josh Wilson and Steve Mundt. The Quakers' Kyle Mautner and Dmitry Mautner snapped Liberty duo Nicaise Muamba and Chase Burton's four-match doubles winning streak with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 match.
  • Liberty's Wilson was the only player to win his singles bout. The Reigate, United Kingdom, native defeated the Quakers' Shatalin in a third set 10-point tiebreaker 11-9 for a 3-6, 6-6, 1-0 (11-9) win. He was the only Flame to go 2-0 in singles today.
  • Penn's Zhu (No. 3 singles), No. 52 Mautner (No. 1 singles) and Graziani (No. 2 singles) won, in that order, to make it 4-0 and seal the match for the Quakers. Mautner handed Muamba his first loss of the spring, 6-3, 6-0.
  • In his first singles action of the spring, Mundt lost to the Quakers' Jason Hildenbrandt (6-4, 6-2). Burton fell to Noah Makarome of Penn on court five, 6-3, 6-3, which made it 6-0 in favor of Penn.
  • Liberty and Penn met for the first time ever on the tennis court on Friday.
  • The Flames have dropped the doubles point in each of their first three matches of the spring.

Next Up

  • The Flames are back in action on Sunday morning when they play a road match at Princeton (0-0). Match time is set for 10 a.m. at Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, N.J., in what will be the first-ever meeting between the two universities.
