2019 ASUN Conference Lacrosse Preseason Honors and Awards

Liberty senior captains Brianna McCaffrey and Kayla Foster were both named to the ASUN Lacrosse Preseason All-Conference squad, while McCaffrey earned preseason ASUN Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors.

In addition, the Lady Flames lacrosse team was slotted to finish third in the ASUN Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Poll, released by the league office on Friday afternoon.

Foster was also tabbed the ASUN Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year.

"We are really excited to begin our journey with ASUN Lacrosse. For us to start our inaugural season with two of our seniors named to the all-conference team shows a lot about how respected we are as a program," stated Liberty Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. "I am thrilled for Bri to be named preseason defender of the year. She had a phenomenal season for us last year, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for her this season. I have no doubt in my mind that Kayla will go down as the most decorated player in our program's history, so it is no surprise to me that she received this honor. We cannot wait to kick off the season!"

McCaffrey, a midfielder, enjoyed the best season of her Liberty career in 2018, finishing fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.72) and 20th in ground balls per game (2.94) while leading the team in goals as well with 40. The Boca Raton, Fla., native was also a four-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week last season.

For her efforts, she earned Big South All-Conference first team accolades for the first time in her career and is now a three-time all-conference selection. McCaffrey shares ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors with Jacksonville's Erica Beal and Kennesaw State's Maura Palandro.

Foster, an attacker, was a three-time All-Big South performer over her first three seasons with the Lady Flames. As a junior in 2018, Foster led the team in assists (38, No. 26 in nation), points (65) and draw controls (72). She also set a new program single-game record with a 10-assist game, the second-most assists in a single game for any player in NCAA DI lacrosse in 2018.

Foster is the program's all-time leader in assists with 100, and with 181 career points, she is nearing the program record for points (187), held by former Lady Flame Morgan Becker (2012-15).

In addition to McCaffrey and Foster being named to the preseason all-conference team, Lady Flames midfielders Carly White and Mia Toscano garnered inclusion on the ASUN's Preseason Watch List.

White, a junior captain, was a two-time first team All-Big South performer and the first player in program history to earn first team all-conference honors as both a freshman and sophomore. Toscano had a strong freshman season in 2018 and was selected to the Big South All-Conference second team.

Meanwhile, Liberty is picked to come in third in the ASUN. The Lady Flames garnered one first-place vote and 35 points in the poll. Defending conference champion Jacksonville received three first-place votes and 45 points in the poll to finish first, followed by second place Coastal Carolina with three first-place votes and 43 points.

Following Liberty in the poll were Kennesaw State (fourth place, 28 points), Stetson (fifth place, 24 points), Kent State (sixth place, 13 points) and Howard (seventh place, eight points).

Liberty was picked to finish fourth in the Big South Conference in its final year in the league in 2018. However, the Lady Flames enjoyed their best season in program history with a 13-5 overall record and 6-1 mark in the Big South, good for second place in the league standings.

The Lady Flames closed out the year in the No. 38 position in the NCAA Lacrosse RPI, higher than where any team in the ASUN finished in 2018. Jacksonville finished No. 43, followed by Coastal Carolina at No. 74.

The Lady Flames will open their spring 2019 slate at Lehigh on Feb. 9. Liberty's home opener will be played Feb. 17 against Notre Dame in what will be the first time the Fighting Irish have ever played at Liberty in any sport. The Lady Flames' first-ever ASUN Conference match will be on March 16 at Kennesaw State, with their ASUN home opener slated for March 24 versus Stetson.
