Foster, McCaffrey, Tarris and White Named 2019 Lacrosse Team Captains

The Liberty women's lacrosse team has named Kayla Foster, Brianna McCaffrey, Aubrie Tarris and Carly White as its four team captains for the upcoming 2019 season.

"I could not be prouder of these four young women. All four of them have grown so much in their time here," stated Liberty Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. "To see them grown into strong leaders has been really special. They balance each other out really well, and we feel very confident that this group is beyond capable to lead this team to a place we have never been. I am really excited to watch them continue to grow as leaders and walk alongside this great group of young women who are committed and bought into our mission."

Foster, a senior attacker, enters her final season as the program's all-time leader in assists (100) and ranks second in career points (181), needing only seven points to break the school record held by Morgan Becker (187 points, 2012-15). She is a three-time All-Big South selection and a Big South Freshman of the Year and VaSID Rookie of the Year (2016) honoree.

Foster enjoyed a successful junior campaign in 2018 with 27 goals, a team-best 38 assists (No. 26 in country), and team bests in points (65) and draw controls (72). She finished No. 21 in the nation in assists per game (2.11) and dished out a program-record 10 assists in Liberty's 21-7 win over Longwood on April 11.

Foster, who hails from Sewickley, Pa., will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in exercise science.  

"Being voted a captain by your teammates is a privilege and an honor. It is incredibly humbling to know that so many people support you and have your back," Foster said. "I am grateful to be a part of a team that plays for something so much bigger than any title or any award. I can't wait to be a part of something special this season with the team we have this year."

McCaffrey, a senior midfielder, is the program's all-time leader in draw controls (182) and caused turnovers (91). She is a three-time Big South All-Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2018.

McCaffrey put together an impressive junior campaign, leading the team in goals (40), ground balls (53) and caused turnovers (49). She placed fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.72) for a Lady Flames squad which led the country in caused turnovers per game (14.28). McCaffrey was a four-time Big South Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week recipient last spring.

McCaffrey, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies.

"Being named captain by my fellow teammates really means a lot to me, and I am honored by their decision. Knowing they see that I can lead the team and make decisions with them really is amazing," McCaffrey stated. "I hope to accomplish getting this team further than we have gone before and get a championship. I personally want to accomplish growing with the girls individually on and off the field and watch them become amazing lacrosse players, so they are able to keep building the program up."

Tarris, a senior goalkeeper, ranks third in program history in career goals-against-average (13.28) and fourth in saves (165). 

As a junior, Tarris made 15 appearances in net, including 14 starts. She posted a 7-3 record, .414 save percentage, 60 saves and a 12.10 goals-against-average.

Tarris, who hails from Sewickley, Pa., will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

"It's a huge honor to be selected to be captain of this team. This team is made is up of a great group of girls who are hard-working and committed to this program," Tarris said. "Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to pour into and rally behind my teammates as we take on our new ASUN Conference."

White, the only junior among the group of captains, is the only player in program history to be named first team all-conference as both a freshman and sophomore. She also earned Big South Conference Freshman of the Year and Inside Women's Lacrosse All-Rookie team honors in her first season with the Lady Flames in 2017. White has brought consistent production to the table in two years, totaling 53 goals, 32 assists, 85 points, 85 ground balls, 47 caused turnovers and 86 draw controls.

As a sophomore, she finished second on the team in goals (28), third in assists (14), fourth in points (42), second in draw controls (62), second in ground balls (45) and tied for third in caused turnovers (21).

White, a native of Marietta, Ga., plans to graduate in May 2020 with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies.

"To be named captain is such a humbling thing for me, and it's a title and honor I hope to carry and share responsibility as we enter this season," White stated. "Our goal is to be a team with a like-mindset as we chase championship rings." 

The Lady Flames will open their spring 2019 slate at Lehigh on Feb. 9. Liberty's first home contest will be against Notre Dame, Feb. 17. The Lady Flames' inaugural ASUN match will be at Kennesaw State on March 16.
