Following an impressive run to the championship match at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, Liberty Lady Flames tennis senior Ashley Bongart came up short in the final on Sunday at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center.
Bongart met fellow Commonwealth foe Natalie Novotna of the Virginia Tech Hokies in the championship match. Novotna, the No. 32-ranked player in the country, knocked off Bongart in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, for the crown.
Despite the setback, Bongart finished the prestigious event, the only collegiate clay court tournament in the country, with a 4-1 singles record. The Bradenton, Fla., native is 10-4 in singles, this fall.
Bongart and her teammate, fellow senior Lara Soares, combined to win eight matches (seven singles, one doubles) at the three-day event.
Liberty's last fall tournament will be the UNLV Rebel Invite in Las Vegas, Nev., next Friday through Sunday.
