4-Goal Second Half Propels Liberty to 5-0 Win Over Longwood

Leading 1-0 after one half of play, the Liberty Flames used a barrage of goals during the first 25 minutes of the second half for a 5-0 victory over the Longwood Lancers, Tuesday evening at Longwood Athletics Complex.

The Flames scored four goals to open up a five goal cushion heading into the 71st minute, allowing them to cruise to the shutout. 

Liberty evens its record at 4-4-1 on the year in the first non-conference meeting between the two teams since 2011. Longwood drops to 3-7.

Turning Point
     Up 1-0 after one half of play, Liberty started its run of four unanswered goals less than a minute into the second half. Midfielder Kevin Mendoza deflected in a shot by Bobby Bynum for a 2-0 lead.
     Less than nine minutes later, Nico Bellarde moved Tresor Mbuyu into open space with a long pass out of the Liberty end. Mbuyu buried his second goal of the night for a commanding 3-0 edge.

  • Liberty outshot Longwood, 22-11, in the contest. The Flames held a 13-4 advantage in the second half.
  • Liberty put 13 shots on goal in the match, while limiting Longwood to two.
  • The Flames recorded their third shutout of the season. Brogan Engbers made two saves in goal for Liberty.
  • For the first time this season, Liberty had two players scored more than one goal apiece in a match. Tresor Mbuyu netted two goals and now leads Liberty with eight. Kevin Mendoza, who has scored a goal in each of the last four games, also had two markers and has seven on the year.
  • With two goals, Mbuyu recorded his third multi-goal of the season. Mendoza's was his first multi-goal of the year.
  • Defender/midfielder Shaun Stocker scored his first goal of the year on penalty kick. Eight different Flames have now tallied at least one goal in 2018.
  • 21 players saw extended minutes for the Flames in the contest.
  • The two teams were playing as non-conference opponents for the first time since 2011. Both teams were members of the Big South from 2011-17.
