Following a standout meet in the season opener at Campbell, Liberty freshman Gianni Pitto was named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week.
A native of Lodi, Calif., Pitto is the first Liberty freshman since Prudence Rooker (Nov. 4, 2014) to be named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week, and joins Erin Curry (Oct. 26, 2011) as the only two Lady Flames to be honored after their first collegiate meet. The Lady Flames have now received 25 weekly honors in program history, including six CCSA Diver of the Week awards and 19 CCSA Swimmer of the Week mentions.
Pitto had one of the best debuts in program history on Saturday at Campbell, helping Liberty to a 159-98 victory. She is the first Liberty swimmer all-time to win three individual events during her collegiate debut, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:04.57), 200 breaststroke (2:20.83) and 400 IM (4:28.95) on Saturday. The freshman swam the fastest second leg of anyone in the 200 medley relay, going 29.75 during the 200 medley relay.
During her three victories, she won by a combined 14.64 seconds. After just one meet, Pitto is already sixth in program history in the 400 IM, ninth in the 200 breaststroke and 10th in the 100 breaststroke.
Liberty will compete in New Mexico for the first time in program history, competing in the New Mexico State Duals in Las Cruces, N.M., Friday and Saturday. The trip will coincide with Liberty's football game at New Mexico State.
