Medina and Soares will appear in the finals in both doubles and singles on Sunday.
Lady Flames seniors Maria Medina and Lara Soares will appear in the finals in both doubles and singles on Sunday, following an impressive display on Saturday on day two of the Hokie Fall Invite.
Medina and Soares won their doubles match in dramatic fashion in the morning and then each took two singles matches at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The duo will play for a doubles title and singles titles in their respective draws on the final day of competition tomorrow.
In two days of competition, the four Lady Flames players have combined to post a 14-3 record (5-1 doubles, 9-2 singles).
Medina and Soares' victory in morning doubles came in a semifinal match against Iowa State's Mary Cancini and Annabella Bonadonna by virtue of a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5). They will move on to face VCU's Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Kanako Yado in tomorrow's championship match of the Brotherhood Doubles flight.
Medina dominated both of her opponents in singles on the way to qualifying for the finals. In total, the senior from Venezuela won 24 games and surrendered only five in the two matches. She topped Delaware's Viva Laas 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Appalachian State's Kate Earnhardt 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. She will take on Maria Alcaide Baka of VCU in Sunday's Duty Singles draw title match.
After receiving a bye on Friday in the Ut Prosim Singles flight, Soares looked fresh on Saturday. The senior from Brazil needed two sets to defeat Penn State's Gabby O'Gorman by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Soares then beat VCU's Exposito Diaz-Delgado 6-4, 6-4, setting up a showdown with Penn State's Chelsea Sawyer in tomorrow's final.
Seniors Ashley Bongart and Anna Dollar also competed on Saturday, earning a doubles win together and each claiming one singles match. The tandem comfortably took its doubles match, 8-3 over Georgia Southern's Paige Christian and Elizabeth Goines. The duo is now 2-1 on the weekend.
In singles, Bongart won her quarterfinal bout versus Yano (VCU) 6-2, 7-5. In the semifinals, James Madison's Daniela Voloh knocked off Bongart (6-0, 6-3) to reach the finals in the Honor Singles draw.
Similarly to Bongart, Dollar also was victorious in her first singles match, a come-from-behind three-set triumph against the VCU Rams' Noumea Witmus (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) in a quarterfinal match of the Leadership Singles flight. However, Iowa State's Bonadonna took down Dollar 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
