Salas will play in tomorrow's final of the White draw.
The Liberty men's team won a total of 11 matches on day two of the Liberty University Invitational on Saturday at the Cook Tennis Center.
On a long day which featured morning doubles and two singles sessions, the Flames' Nicaise Muamba, Vince Salas and William Barker each won a pair of singles matches. Muamba and Salas will both play for titles in their respective draws tomorrow.
"We are excited to have Nicaise and Vince in the finals tomorrow," said Liberty head coach Derek Schwandt. "We welcome all Flames fans to come out and support us in the final day of the Liberty Invitational. Our team is fighting well, and we will look to finish strong."
Salas and his doubles partner, freshman Farid Juri, will also play for first place in the doubles White draw, after picking up a 7-5 win over Rodrigo Magalhaes and William Crane in the morning. They will face Gardner-Webb's Johan Fors and Nick Ulehla on Sunday at noon.
Below is a breakdown of singles play:
Nicaise Muamba Muamba continued his dominant run through the Red draw by taking both of his matches in straight sets. He first knocked off Oscar Alvarez of Presbyterian 6-1, 6-0, followed by a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Leo Menezes of Charlotte. The Flames sophomore is 3-0 in singles on the weekend and will face Millen Hurrion of Gardner-Webb in tomorrow's championship.
Vince Salas Salas also went 2-0 in singles competition on Saturday, but his path to victory featured a lengthy semifinal bout lasting over three hours. In Salas' quarterfinal match, he got by Presbyterian's Jonathan Bedard 6-2, 6-4. The Liberty junior then squared off with Radford's Michiel Meekers in the next round.
The marathon match between the two competitors featured tiebreakers in all three sets, in addition to Salas fending off a match point for Meekers in the second set. Salas finally prevailed 6-7 (4), 7-6 (0), 7-6 (2). He will meet Presbyterian's Nick McKinney in tomorrow's final.
William Barker Barker won two matches in the White singles backdraw on day two. The freshman picked up the first singles win of his college career in dominant fashion (6-0, 6-2) against Dylan Whitehead of Radford. The Statesville, N.C., native then defeated Gardner-Webb's Ulehla in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) as well. Barker will meet Presbyterian's Alberto Conde in the consolation final.
Ian Sturgill After losing to Charlotte's Menezes in two sets (6-2, 6-3) on Saturday morning in a Red draw quarterfinal match, Sturgill rebounded with a three-set win versus Oscar Alvarez of Presbyterian (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). The Flames freshman trailed 3-0 in the third set before winning six of the final seven games.
Josh Wilson Wilson lost in the quarterfinals of the Red draw to Charlotte's Ben Wayand but bounced back with a three-set victory in the afternoon (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) against his teammate, Juri.
Eddie Gutierrez Gutierrez came up short in his first singles match, losing to Maximillian Scholl of Gardner-Webb by a 6-4, 7-5 score. However, the Liberty senior rebounded with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Charlotte's Henry Lieberman.
Chase Burton Burton, a junior, upended Lieberman (Charlotte) 6-1, 6-1 in his first backdraw match of the day. The Naples, Fla., native then fell to Scholl (Gardner-Webb) in a three-set battle, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2.
Day three of the Liberty University Invitational will begin at noon on Sunday with doubles play, followed by the final singles session.
