Flames Set to Open 2018-19 Season at Rod Myers Invitational

No. 42 Liberty kicks off its 2018-19 season this weekend when they travel to Durham, N.C., for the 2018 Rod Myers Invitational.

No. 17 Duke will host this event for the ninth consecutive year at his own golf course, the Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards), Saturday (36 holes of continuous play) and Sunday (final 18 holes).

Tournament Reflections – Liberty's Previous Showing at the Rod Myers Invitational
• The Rod Myers Invitational has appeared on the fall portion of Liberty's schedule each of the last five seasons.
• The Flames posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in 2012 (301-286-285-872/+8) and 2013 (294-282-293-869/+5) to highlight its showing at this event.
• Last year, Liberty opened the season with a seventh place finish at this event, carding a 6-over par 870 (297-279-294). During the Flames' second round, Liberty posted 9-under par 279, the team's second best 18-hole total of the fall season.
• Graduated senior Mickey DeMorat led the Flames at this event, finishing tied for fourth-place with an 8-under par 208 (76-64-68).

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty's Last Time Out
• The Flames finished last year ranked No. 42 in the final Golfstat rankings. Liberty posted six top-three team finishes in 2017-18, including a first-place finish at the Oregon's Duck Invitational and the Big South Men's Golf Championship.
• Liberty's last time on the course came just down the road from the site of the Rod Myers Invitational when the Flames participated in the NCAA Raleigh Regional, May 14-16. Liberty finished the Raleigh Regional tied for eighth place out of 14 teams, closing out the team's seventh NCAA Regional appearance in the last nine years.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes
• After winning five of the last eight Big South titles (2011, 2012, 2014, 216 and 2018), the Flames will be looking for a different avenue to the NCAA Regionals during their first season of competition in the ASUN Conference.
• During the offseason, Liberty's 17 of its 20 NCAA Division I athletics programs moved their conference affiliation from the Big South Conference to the ASUN Conference. Liberty was a member of the Big South Conference for 27 years, starting its membership during the 1991-92 athletic year.
• The men's golf team is looking to replace two of the most successful players in program history who graduated last year. Mickey DeMorat finished his career with the second-best scoring average in program history (72.28) and posted 13 career top-10 finishes. Isaiah Logue ranked just behind him in third place in school history in career stroke average (72.52), while posting 18 career top-10 finishes.
• The Rod Myers Invitational will mark the return of 2017 Big South Freshman of the Year Kieran Vincent to Liberty's lineup. The redshirt sophomore was sidelined with an injury during the 2017-18 year after posting a 72.15 stroke average as a freshman two years ago.
