Official ASUN Release

Liberty junior right-side hitter Casey Goodwin has been named the Fan-Voted Preseason ASUN Volleyball Player of the Year. Additionally, conference newcomer Liberty appears fifth in the ASUN Preseason Volleyball Poll, released Monday by the league office. The poll was voted on by all nine of the conference's head coaches.

Goodwin received 223 votes in the Facebook fan poll in order to be named Fan-Voted Preseason ASUN Volleyball Player of the Year. A native of Rougemont, N.C., Goodwin had a standout season as a sophomore, earning Big South All-Conference and VaSID All-State second team honors. She led the team in kills, while splitting time at the right-side and outside hitter positions. This is the seventh straight year that the ASUN has conducted a preseason fan poll on social media for conference preseason superlative awards.

Florida Gulf Coast was voted the preseason favorite by the head coaches, with 75 total points and six first-place votes. The Eagles have been runners-up at each of the last two ASUN Volleyball Championships. Defending ASUN regular-season and tournament champion Kennesaw State was picked second with 70 points and three first-place votes, followed in third by Lipscomb (66 points).

It was a tight race in the middle of the pack, as fourth through sixth (North Florida – 46, Liberty – 45, Jacksonville – 44) were separated by just two points. Stetson (22), North Alabama (20) and NJIT (17) appear seventh through ninth, respectively.

The Lady Flames are 4-1 all-time against current members of the ASUN, including 2-0 versus Stetson, 1-0 against both Jacksonville and North Florida and 0-1 versus Kennesaw State. Liberty's roster features a pair of returning All-Big South selections in juniors Anna Gragg and Goodwin, along with 2017 Big South All-Freshman Team member Amaya Williams. Senior libero Margaret Latchford enters the season ranked 13th in program history with 1,353 career digs.

Liberty begins its 2018 schedule on Aug. 24, taking on Indiana State in a tournament hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Lady Flames play 16 out of their first 17 matches away from the Vines Center, with their home opener coming on Sept. 11 against Virginia. The team opens conference play at North Florida on Sept. 21.

The 2018 ASUN Volleyball Championship will be a six-team tournament, held at KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw, Ga. The winner of the ASUN Volleyball Championship will earn the ASUN's automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. North Alabama, in the first year of transition from Division II to Division I membership, is eligible to compete in the conference tournament, but cannot compete in the NCAA Championship.
