DeMorat Named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar

Liberty graduated senior Mickey DeMorat was recently honored for his work in the classroom when he was named to the 2018 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar team.

DeMorat was among the record number of honorees named to this year's Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, which is sponsored by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

A new record number of student-athletes earned All-America Scholar status, including 265 student-athletes at the Division I level, 126 in Division II and 23 in NAIA. Additionally, 62 honorees were added to the previously released Division III Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career GPA of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

DeMorat finished his academic pursuit at Liberty in May, graduating with a sport management degree and a 3.38 cumulative career GPA.

Last year, DeMorat was named to the 2017 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar listing, becoming the 12th golfer in program history to be named to golf's top collegiate academic team. With this year's selection, DeMorat becomes the fifth golfer in program history to be named to the team multiple times during their Liberty career.

DeMorat finished off his senior year in May, posting a 72.00 season stroke average, while recording four top-10 finishes and a team-best three top-five finishes. The senior finished his Liberty career with a 72.28 stroke average, the second-best mark in program history.

The native of Merritt Island, Fla., played 17 of his 39 rounds at par or better during the season (43.6 percent). He posted under-par tournament totals five times, including a 7-under par 209 for a runner-up finish at the Big South Men's Golf Championship and a 4-under par 209 for a 17th-place showing at the NCAA Raleigh Regional.

DeMorat earned All-Big South first-team honors as a senior and was named to the Big South All-Championship team following his runner-up finish. Additionally, he was recently named to the PING All-Region team.

Shortly after graduation, DeMorat became Liberty's first-ever qualifier for the U.S. Open. The Flames former standout golfer finished the four-day event, annually known as the toughest test of golf in the world, carding a 17-over par 297 (72-72-80-73), finishing tied for 56th place on the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course (par 70, 7,440 yards), June 14-17.
