Anderson and Hashiguchi (left) and Medina and Soares (right) were recognized as all-state doubles teams on Thursday.
A pair of Liberty women's tennis doubles teams was honored at the state level on Thursday. The Lady Flames' pairing of Maria Medina and Lara Soares were one of three units in the Commonwealth named to the 2018 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Doubles first team, while Liberty's Rebekah Anderson and Grace Hashiguchi were voted to the VaSID All-State Doubles second team.
All four Lady Flames are being named to the all-state teams for the first time in their respective careers. Liberty has now had six doubles units named to the listing, all of which have come in the past four years.
Medina and Soares, both juniors and both in their first year with the Lady Flames during the 2017-18 season, posted a 21-7 overall record this season and an 18-5 mark in spring competition playing almost exclusively in the No. 2 slot in the lineup (17-5 record). They finished No. 3 in the Big South in dual match winning percentage (.783) among all doubles pairings.
The duo, which was named to the Big South Conference First Team All-Conference Doubles list, won their final nine matches of the year (March 31-April 21). Medina and Soares went 7-1 in Big South singles matches in the regular season and 3-0 against conference foes in the 2018 Big South Women's Tennis Championship.
Anderson, a junior, and Hashiguchi, a freshman, formed a dynamic pairing in the spring after having not played a match together in the fall. The tandem recorded a 16-2 record for the second-best winning percentage (.889) among Big South doubles units, this spring, and finished the year as the best No. 3 doubles team (15-2, .882) in the league.
A Big South Conference First Team All-Conference Doubles recipient, Anderson and Hashiguchi ended the year on a 10-match winning streak (March 24-April 21), with six of those victories coming by a 6-2 margin or greater. The duo, which was one of three pairings voted to the VaSID All-State second team for doubles, also finished the year as the No. 5 doubles team in the Oracle/ITA Division I Regional Rankings for the Atlantic Region.
