2018 Big South Men's Golf Coach of the Year Jeff Thomas recently spoke with LFSN reporter Alan York to wrap up the Flames' 2017-18 season on the golf course.

The Flames finished the season ranked No. 42 in the final national rankings and advanced to NCAA Regional play for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. Liberty played in the NCAA Raleigh Regional, finishing tied for eighth place.

During their final season as a Big South Conference member, the Flames captured their fifth conference title in the last eight years. Liberty won the conference championship by a 19-stroke margin of victory over second-place Campbell.

Liberty's Mickey DeMorat and Ervin Chang were both earned All-Big South honors and were selected to the PING All-Region team. Liberty has placed at least one player on the PING All-Region team each year since 2010 and has had 13 total all-region honorees since 2008.

DeMorat jumpstarted his professional career in grand style last week, earning the fourth and final qualifying spot at the Maryland Sectional qualifier for this week's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hill Golf Course in Southampton, N.Y. DeMorat, who claimed the spot by winning in a three-man playoff, is the first Flame in men's golf program history to play in the national championship event.
