No. 7 Seed Liberty Headed to NCAA Raleigh Regional

Five-time Big South champion Liberty gets to stay close to home and in a state it has had regional success as the Flames have earned the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Raleigh Regional in Raleigh, N.C.

The last time the Flames participated in an NCAA Regional in the "Tar Heel" state, Liberty walked away with a team title and a ticket to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.

The Flames finished three strokes ahead of Florida and six shots clear of Auburn to post a winning score of 4-over par 868 (283-293-292) in the 2012 NCAA Greensboro Regional, held at the Grandover Resort – East Course.

Liberty's NCAA Regional title positioned the Flames to finish in 10th place at the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship at the historic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

This year's regional play for the Flames will be held on May 14-16 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. (par 71, 7,273 yards). Liberty will be making the program's seventh appearance at an NCAA Regional in the last eight seasons and ninth in program history.

The top five teams in the 14-team NCAA Raleigh Regional will advance to the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., May 25-30.

The NCAA Austin Regional field includes six conference champions who were automatic qualifiers into this field: No. 1 Georgia Tech (ACC), No. 7 Liberty (Big South), No. 11 Middle Tennessee State (Conference USA), No. 12 Augusta (MEAC), No. 13 Davidson (Atlantic 10) and No. 14 Iona (MAAC).

No. 1 seed Georgia Tech leads the field at the Raleigh Regional, as the Yellow Jackets are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest Golfstat national rankings.

Georgia Tech is followed in the rankings by No. 2 seed California (No. 9 nationally), No. 3 seed Texas (No. 16 nationally), No. 4 seed Arizona State (No. 21 nationally), No. 5 seed Duke (No. 28 nationally) and No. 6 seed and tournament host NC State (No. 36 nationally). Liberty enters the event ranked No. 40 in the country.

The Lonnie Poole Golf Course features a stunning layout that was designed by Arnold Palmer and the design team at Arnold Palmer Design Company. With breathtaking views of the Raleigh skyline and the award-winning Centennial Campus, the golf course has become a favorite in the golf community.

The Big South Conference will be well represented at the NCAA Raleigh Regional. The field also features No. 10 seed Campbell, the runner-up at last month's Big South Men's Golf Championship, and High Point's Brendan MacDougall, medalist at the conference tournament.

Liberty, winners of the Big South title five out of the last eight years, will be making its ninth NCAA Regional appearance in program history.

As Big South Conference champions, the Flames received automatic bids to the NCAA Regionals in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The men's golf program is one of only two programs at Liberty to earn an at-large selection to the NCAA postseason event, joining the baseball team who was an at-large team in 2014. The men's golf program has received at-large bids to the NCAA Regionals in 2003, 2006, 2013 and 2017.
