Big South Sasser Cup standings (through fall seasons)

Through the completion of the 2007 fall athletic season, Liberty leads all Big South Conference member institutions in the race for the league's 2007-08 George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup Trophy. The Flames have accumulated 64.00 points in six sports for a conference-best 10.67 average, ahead of second-place Coastal Carolina (9.33, 56 points in six sports) and third-place High Point (9.00, 45 points in five points).

Liberty, which last won the Sasser Cup in 2002-03, won a Big South-record five conference championships during the fall season, taking home titles in men's and women's cross country, men's soccer, volleyball and football. The league's previous best for the fall season was three championships, accomplished six times.

Liberty and Coastal Carolina had dominated the race for the Sasser Cup over the last 10 years. During the past decade, Liberty and Coastal Carolina had each claimed the Cup five times. Liberty was the Sasser Cup victor five out of six seasons (1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2001-02 and 2002-03). Coastal Carolina hoisted the Cup following the 2000-01 season, as well as the last four years.

Trailing Liberty and Coastal Carolina in this year's standings are Winthrop, who is in fourth-place with an average of 8.90 (44.50 points in five sports), followed by Radford at 7.20 (36.00 points in five sports). UNC Asheville holds the sixth position with a 4.80 average (24.00 points in five sports), while VMI is seventh at 4.50 (22.50 points in five sports). Charleston Southern stands eighth at 3.60 (18.00 points in five sports).

In addition to the overall lead, Liberty leads the men's all-sports award race. LU's current average of 10.83 (32.50 points in three men's sports) is ahead of Winthrop's 9.25 average (18.5 points in two sports). Radford is third in the men's race with a 8.75 average (17.5 points in two sports).

Coastal Carolina, with a regular-season championship in women's soccer, stands first in the women's all-sports award chase with an 11.33 average (34.00 points in three women's sports), just ahead of Liberty's 10.50 average (31.50 points in three sports). High Point, which won the 2007 Big South Women's Soccer Championship, is third with an average of 10.17 (30.50 points in three sports).

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on a points and ratio system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the league's 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively.
A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member's point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
