Thanks to impressive efforts at the Virginia Challenge, Liberty seniors Darrel Jones (Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week) and Kimone Green (Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week) have both earned Big South Conference weekly honors.
Jones' award is his third of 2018 and the ninth of his career, while Green is recognized by the Big South for the second time in three weeks.
Jones placed second overall and first among collegiate entrants in the Virginia Challenge men's triple jump invitational section on Friday, reaching a career-best 51-5. The New York native tops the 2018 Big South men's triple jump list by two and a half feet and ranks No. 3 in conference history. He is currently listed No. 13 in the East Region and No. 26 nationally for the event.
Green enjoyed a busy and successful Saturday evening in Charlottesville, beginning in the 400 hurdles. She placed third in the event with a time of 59.12 seconds, breaking Mary Witmer's program record of 59.84. Green climbed to No. 7 in Big South history and punched her ticket to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
Green later led off for the second-fastest 4 x 400 relay squad in program history and the fifth-fastest quartet in Big South annals. She, Cortney Dowling, Ty'Asia Dansbury and Tanner Ealum posted a season-best time of 3:40.85 for fourth place.
Liberty will return to Lannigan Field in Charlottesville for Saturday's Virginia Grand Prix. The one-day competition is tentatively slated for an 11 a.m. start.
