Golf Captures 5th Big South Championship Title in 8 Years

No. 1 seed Liberty capped off its comeback quest on Sunday, posting a 12-under par 276 to win the 2018 Big South Men's Golf Championship title by 19 strokes.

After carding an 11-over par 299 during its first time around The Patriot Golf Club (par 72, 7,120 yards) on Friday, the Flames played the final 36 holes at a combined 27-under par.

The dominant win secures Liberty's fifth Big South title in the last eight years (2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018) and sends the Flames to NCAA Regional play for the seventh time during the same stretch (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018).

The Flames will learn of their NCAA Regional destination on May 2 when the tournament field is announced by the Golf Channel at 5:30 p.m.

Liberty's winning score of 16-under par 848 (299-273-276) was its second-best in program history at this event, falling four shots short of the Flames' 2012 Big South championship team's score of 20-under par 844 (280-275-289).

The Flames finished the tournament 19 shots clear of second-place Campbell's 3-over par 867 (293-288-286) and 28 shots ahead of High Point's 12-over par 876 (298-285-293).

The Flames were paced during the champion and final round by senior Mickey DeMorat (76-67-66) and freshman Alexandre Fuchs (74-68-67). Both were named to the Big South All-Championship team after finishing in second place with a 7-under par 209.

High Point's Brendan MacDougall claimed medalist honors, firing a winning score of 13-under par 203 (73-63-67). He finished one shot off the Big South record of 14-under par 202 (67-66-69) set by Campbell's Jesper Svensson, last year, on the same course.

Besides DeMorat and Fuchs being named to the Big South All-Championship team, Liberty also took home several other postseason honors, which were awarded following the event.

Liberty Head Coach Jeff Thomas was named the Big South Men's Golf Coach of the Year, the third such honor of his career (also in 2011 and 2012).

DeMorat and sophomore Ervin Chang were named to the Big South All-Conference team, while DeMorat was a Big South All-Academic team honoree. Fuchs was also selected to the Big South All-Freshman Team.

Alongside runner-up finishes by DeMorat and Fuchs, the Flames also placed two more golfers inside the top-10 final standings.

Chang finished tied for seventh place with an even par 216 (75-69-72), while senior Isaiah Logue finished one shot behind and shared ninth place with a 1-over par 217 (74-72-71).

Gabe Lench, who helped the Flames tie a Big South 18-hole team record on Saturday with an individual 3-under par 69, finished the event overall tied for 19th place with a 6-over par 222 (79-69-74).
