Chase Cassady was named Big South Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Official Release After a dominant pitching performance against Radford last week, Liberty junior right-hander Chase Cassady was named Big South Pitcher of the Week, announced today.
The award is Cassady's second career Big South Pitcher of the Week honor, as she was also honored on March 14, 2016. Cassady joins teammates Julia DiMartino (Feb. 12, March 19) and Elizabeth Engler (March 26), making this the second year in a row, and third time in program history, that three different Lady Flames have been named Big South Pitcher of the Week in the same season.
Hailing from Orlando, Fla., Cassady was nearly unhittable last week, starting both games of a doubleheader sweep at Radford on Saturday. She pitched 9 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on four hits, all singles, striking out six and walking two, going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA while holding the Highlanders to a .121 batting average.
During Saturday's first game, Cassady gave up a run in the first inning, before pitching 1-2-3 frames during the second, third and fifth. She left the game with a 3-1 lead after five innings, earning the win. In game two, she was even better, allowing just one hit in 4 1/3 innings as the starter. After walking the first batter of the third inning, she set down the final seven batters she faced before Julia DiMartino came on in relief. In total, the Lady Flames retired the last 15 Radford batters in the game.
Cassady continued her run of success in conference play, as she is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA, .193 opponents' batting average and 26 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings pitched.
Liberty (32-12, 12-3 Big South), tied for the lead in the Big South standings, will play four home games this week. The Lady Flames host Virginia Tech tomorrow at 6 p.m. before hosting Charleston Southern for a three-game series, Friday and Saturday at Liberty Softball Stadium.
