Burton and Matheson both win in singles on Thursday at Campbell.
Liberty dropped its Big South and regular-season finale, 5-2, at Campbell on Thursday at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
The Flames close out the regular season with a 12-11 overall record and 4-3 mark in the Big South. Campbell improves to 14-5 on the year and 6-1 in conference play.
The Camels won the match on the strength of their doubles triumphs on courts one and two and singles victories in the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3 singles matches. Campbell also took the No. 5 singles match, while Liberty's two points on the day came from senior Sam Matheson (No. 1) and sophomore Chase Burton (No. 2).
In doubles, the Camels' top pairing of Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner defeated Liberty's No. 1 duo of Diego Castano and Alex Poynter, 6-1. The match on court two between Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal (Campbell) and Matheson and Burton (Liberty) was closer, but Sola and O'Neal prevailed, 6-4, to lock up the doubles point and a 1-0 advantage for the Camels.
The Camels' Ted Williams stretched the lead to 2-0 with his 6-3, 6-1 defeat of his opponent, Castano, on court six. Lukas Schaefer of Campbell made it 3-0, Camels, with his straight-sets (6-2, 6-2) ousting of the Flames' Vince Salas on court four.
The No. 3 singles match between Werner and Gutierrez also went to Campbell's Werner, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Werner's 11th straight singles win lifted the Camels to the official victory and a 4-0 edge.
Matheson (No. 1 singles) and Burton (No. 2 singles each won their respective matches over their opponents, Ondrej Labik (No. 1) and Schwab (No. 2). Matheson topped Labik in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3)). Burton knocked off Schwab, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, for his sixth consecutive singles win. The victories from Liberty's top two players trimmed the deficit to 4-2.
Campbell's Sola made the final score 5-2 with his come-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) decision over Liberty's Poynter on court five.
The bracket for the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship will be released tomorrow (Friday). The three-day tournament, held at Winthrop's Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C., will run from Monday-Wednesday of next week.
