Flames Ready for Regular-Season Finale at Campbell, Thursday Afternoon

The Liberty Flames men's tennis squad will wrap up the regular season at Big South foe Campbell on Thursday afternoon.

First serve from the Nisbet Tennis Center in Buies Creek, N.C., will take place at 2 p.m.

Liberty enters Thursday's contest with a 12-10 overall record and 4-2 mark in the Big South following a pair of 4-3 setbacks in conference last week at Presbyterian and to Winthrop at home, last Friday and Sunday. The Flames are currently tied for third place with Presbyterian (9-12, 4-2 BSC).

The Campbell Camels are 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the Big South to occupy the No. 2 position in the conference standings. They defeated Appalachian State in non-conference action, last Friday, followed by a 4-3 victory over UNC Asheville in league play, last Sunday.

Series History
Campbell holds the all-time series edge, 14-6, on Liberty. The Camels defeated the Flames, 6-1, in Lynchburg in the most recent meeting (March 9, 2017).

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty has won 63 singles matches this spring, including 17 from sophomores, 20 from juniors and 26 from seniors. Senior Diego Castano leads the charge with 14 singles wins during his final campaign. Castano is a Big South-best 14-3 in the No. 6 slot in the lineup.
  • The seeds for the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship, held at Winthrop's Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C., will be released on Friday. Liberty (4-2) is currently tied for third place with Presbyterian (4-2), but PC won the regular-season matchup between the two teams, last week. With a win on Thursday, Liberty and second-place Campbell would each be 5-2, but the Flames would have the head-to-head edge. Winthrop (6-0) and Presbyterian (4-2) will face each other on Thursday as well.
  • Senior Sam Matheson and sophomore Chase Burton have been Liberty's hottest doubles pairing. The duo (9-6) has won five straight matches and is 6-0 in Big South doubles.
  • Burton has been playing well in singles, winning five straight matches to up his record to 13-9 in the spring.

Scouting Campbell
Campbell's top player this spring has been Dustin Werner. Werner is 12-3 in singles, including a 9-0 mark in the No. 3 slot in head coach David Johnson's lineup. Lukas Schaefer (9-4), Gerard Sola (10-7) and Lorenz Schwab (9-7) all boast respectable singles marks as well. The Camels' most formidable doubles duo has been Louis Monterosso and Schaefer in the No. 3 position with a 7-2 mark.
