Lady Flames and Lancers to Square Off in Lynchburg, Wednesday

Liberty will take on conference opponent Longwood on Wednesday afternoon (4 p.m.) at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.

Liberty women's lacrosse will battle against Longwood, Wednesday at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.

The Lady Flames (9-4) enter the week in a tie for third place in the Big South with Campbell at 2-1 after splitting a pair of conference games, last week. Liberty downed Gardner-Webb, 19-8, at home last Wednesday, before falling, 13-4, at No. 19/25 High Point, last Saturday. 

A win over the Lancers would give Liberty a program-record 10th victory.

The Longwood Lancers (6-7) are tied for fifth in the league with a 1-2 mark. Last week, they lost to Radford (15-10, last Wednesday), before bouncing back to beat Gardner-Webb, 15-8, at home on Saturday.

Series History
The Lady Flames are 3-6 all-time against the Lancers but have won the last three meetings.

Liberty won both meetings with Longwood last year, one on the road (18-8 on April 5, 2017) and the other in the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals, 20-13, on April 29, 2017 in Lynchburg.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • A win on Wednesday would give Liberty its 10th victory in 2018 and set a program record in the process. The Lady Flames equaled the program record of nine wins (also done in 2015) last Wednesday vs. Gardner-Webb.
  • Three upperclassmen lead the charge for Liberty in points. Redshirt senior Michaela Rich (26 g, 12 a) and junior Kayla Foster (17 g, 21 a) share the team lead with 38 points, followed closely by top goal scorer, junior Brianna McCaffrey (31 g, 6 a) with 37 points.
  • Liberty enters this week No. 1 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (14.46) for a fourth consecutive week. Over their past five games, they have averaged 16.20 per game, led by 4.40/game (22 total) individually from McCaffrey.
  • As a team, Liberty is No. 4 in the country in ground balls per game (23.92) and No. 6 in shots per game (34.77). McCaffrey checks in at No. 3 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.15) and No. 12 in ground balls per game (3.38), while Foster is No. 37 in total assists with 21. Sophomore Hannah Quast ranks 41st in DI in free-position percentage at .571.
  • The first NCAA Women's Lacrosse RPI of the year was released today, with Liberty listed at No. 59 of 115 NCAA DI teams.
  • McCaffrey broke the school record for career caused turnovers, last Saturday at High Point. She recorded four caused turnovers on that day, and her second one set the new school record of 81. McCaffrey, who now has 83 career caused turnovers, surpassed current Lady Flames assistant coach Nina Dunay, who recorded 80 caused turnovers in her career (2011-15).

 

Scouting Longwood
The Lancers, who are coached by Elaine Jones, are led by Riley Dolan, who is the national leader in assists (49) and ranks fourth in points (73). Longwood goalkeeper Imani West (6-7, 13.74 GAA, .447 SV PCT) is tested frequently, and as a result, she is No. 3 in the nation in saves (139), No. 3 in ground balls per game (4.15) and No. 9 in saves per game (10.69). Longwood checks in at 86th in the RPI.
