Liberty basketball head coach Ritchie McKay announced that Ezra Talbert and Isaiah Williams will be transferring from Liberty. In addition assistant coach, Vic Sfera, has accepted the same position at UNC Charlotte.
"Ezra and Isaiah are both great men that have contributed so much to the program and we appreciate their hard work," McKay said. "We wish both these fine young men the best in their future endeavors."
Talbert, a redshirt junior, will graduate from Liberty this year with a degree in exercise science. Throughout his four years at Liberty, Talbert played in 100 games averaging 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. Scoring 330 career points, Talbert shot 44.5 percent for his career with 45 makes from three-point range. This past season Talbert averaged 2.1 points, 1.2 rebounds while averaging seven minutes per game. Talbert's best game this season came in the season opener against Clarks Summit where he posted season-highs in points (13), rebounds (6) and field goals (6). The native of Olathe, Kan. was also named to the 2016-17 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court after posting a 3.3 grade point average.
Williams played in 30 games this season posting 4.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. The redshirt freshman scored double digits twice this season (11/10 vs. Clarks Summit and 1/9 at Winthrop) and had three games this season where he recorded three assists. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Williams transferred from Akron after playing for the Stivers School for the Arts high school. In of Liberty's biggest wins of the season at Winthrop on Jan. 9 Williams made the game-winning free throws in the final seconds of the game to snap Liberty's 13-game losing streak at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Sfera reunites with Ron Sanchez, who was named head coach on March 27th. Sfera and Sanchez worked together for six seasons at Virginia working under Tony Bennett. Sfera spent the last two seasons with Liberty, winning a school record 43 games during that span.
