Liberty scored early and often, backing up Julia DiMartino's three-hit shutout while defeating Presbyterian, 8-0 in five innings, in game one of a doubleheader, Friday at PC Softball Complex.
Liberty improves to 23-8, including 4-0 in Big South play following its eighth shutout of the season. Presbyterian falls to 2-24, 0-4 in conference games. Each of the last five Liberty-PC games has ended in a Liberty shutout victory.
Julia DiMartino (14-5) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out seven batters against zero walks. It was her sixth shutout of the season and 20th of her career.
Alex Cook (0-7) drew the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits, striking out one and walking one.
Amber Bishop went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored for Liberty, while Autumn Bishop batted 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs. Madison Via went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Sarah Robertson batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Jasmeen Click went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs.
Three different PC batters recorded one hit each.
Amber Bishop hit a double down the left-field line with one out in the top of the first. Alexia Taylor then singled up the middle, with Bishop scoring from second. Robertson singled and Jaclyn Amader was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Via beat out an infield single, and two runs came across on the play, giving Liberty a 3-0 lead. Taylor Hoffman bounced out to the pitcher for the third out.
Click reached on an error to start the second inning before Autumn Bishop doubled. Amber Bishop made it 4-0 with an opposite-field single. Autumn Bishop then scored when Sarah Robertson reached on an error. Cook escaped further damage on an inning-ending double play.
DiMartino retired the first eight batters she faced in the game before giving up back-to-back singles in the third. However, a comebacker ended the inning.
Click led off the fourth with a single up the middle before stealing second. Autumn Bishop then doubled to left center, boosting Liberty's lead to 6-0. Amber Bishop singled to center and went to third when Autumn Bishop was thrown out trying to score. Robertson then bounced an RBI single up the middle for a 7-0 advantage. An error and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. Via's infield single made it 8-0 before a groundout ended the rally.
DiMartino finished off the five-inning shutout victory, getting a strikeout and a pair of flyouts in the fifth.
