Thanks to her impressive Liberty debut, redshirt sophomore javelin thrower Paige Demetriades has been named Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Less than two months after transferring from Pittsburgh to Liberty, Demetriades competed for the first time as a Lady Flame, Friday at the CSU Spring Break Invitational. The native of Lake Hauto, Pa., won the women's javelin by more than 37 feet with a personal-best mark of 156-4.
Demetriades, who currently ranks No. 3 in the NCAA's East Region and No. 12 nationally, punched her ticket to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet. Her throw was the second longest in program history and sits No. 4 on the Big South's all-time women's javelin list.
Demetriades will take this weekend off from competition, but many of her teammates will be in action at the 39th FSU Relays. The Friday meet at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla., will pit Liberty against Auburn, Dartmouth, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Southern Miss in a team-scored competition. The meet gets underway with the men's hammer at 9 a.m.
