Flames Preparing for Return to The Hayt

The Hayt Golfstat Live Scoring

No. 57 Liberty returns to a familiar golf course this weekend when the Flames travel to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., to participate in the 2018 The Hayt.

The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by North Florida at the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,966 yards) on Sunday and Monday. In previous versions of the event, the tournament was held in late February and over a three-day period.

The Flames are returning to the event for the third year in a row and the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Liberty had its best showing of its previous three trips to the Sawgrass Country Club, last season, finishing in fifth place with a 14-over par 878 (289-295-294). Kieran Vincent paced Liberty's efforts in 2017, finishing tied for 14th with a 3-over par 219 (72-27-75).

The Hayt will host another talented field this year with 12 of the 15 teams currently ranked inside the top 100 of the latest Golfstat.com national rankings.

This year's field is led by No. 7 Auburn, followed by No. 24 North Carolina, No. 25 North Florida, No. 39 Louisville, No. 43 Purdue and No 49 Tennessee. Liberty enters the tournament ranked No. 57 in the country, its second highest ranking of the season.

The Flames will once again be led by Ervin Chang, who is having a banner sophomore season. The native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, currently leads the Flames with a 71.63 season stroke average and has played 62.5 percent of his rounds at par or better in 2017-18 (15-of-24).

Last time on the course, Chang fired a bogey free 7-under par 65 during the closing round of the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The career-best score tied for the fifth best 18-hole total in program history.

Mickey DeMorat ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 72.67 season stroke average. The senior missed playing in this event in 2017 due to an injury, but finished tied for 40th place with an 11-over par 227 (77-74-76) in 2016.

Gabe Lench ranks third on the Flames' roster with a 73.00 season stroke average. The junior will be making his third straight start at this event after finishing in 35th place in 2016 (9-over par 225/80-76-69) and tied for 40th place in 2017 (9-over par 225/74-80-71).

Play gets underway at 7:45 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday, with players going off the tees at No. 1 (par 4, 390 yards) and No. 10 (par 4, 405 yards). Live stats for the event will be provided by Golfstat.com.

The Flames are slated to start the first round of the event on Sunday at 8:01 a.m., and will tee off at No. 10 along with golfers from Lipscomb and Louisville.
