General Hackler Championship Live Stats
After a near three-week layoff, No. 55 Liberty returns to the golf course on Saturday to participate in the 2018 General Hackler Championship.
The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Coastal Carolina at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club (par 72, 7,233 yards) in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and features a star-studded field.
All but one of the teams in the 14-team field are currently ranked inside the latest Golfstat.com top 100 team rankings, including No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 8 Georgia Tech.
The remainder of the field includes: LSU (No. 12), North Florida (No. 23), South Carolina (No. 26), N.C. State (No. 31), Kent State (No. 32), Virginia (No. 54), Liberty (No. 55), East Carolina (No. 78), ETSU (No. 81), Coastal Carolina (No. 89), Virginia Tech (No. 95) and Princeton (No. 168).
As they did during their first two events of the spring, a strong finish in this weekend's tournament could allow the Flames to continue to improve their Golfstat ranking.
Liberty finished the fall season ranked No. 70 in the country, but jumped 15 spots in the rankings following a third-place finish at the Sea Best Invitational and a sixth-place showing at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
The event is new to the Liberty's men's golf schedule and has been contested since 2002. Some of the top current professional golfers in the world have participated in this event during their collegiate playing days, including world No. 1 golfer Dustin Johnson (Coastal Carolina), Brandt Snedeker (Vanderbilt), Patrick Reed (Augusta State), Bill Haas (Wake Forest), Jamie Lovemark (Southern Cal) and Brendon de Jonge (Virginia Tech).
The Flames' top golfer this spring has been Ervin Chang, who is a combined 10-under par during a pair of top-10 finishes. He currently leads Liberty with a 71.71 season stroke average.
The sophomore claimed medalist honors at the Sea Best Invitational, winning the event in a playoff after carding a 6-under par 204 (67-67-70). He also finished tied for eighth place at the SunTrust Gator Invitational following a 4-under par 206 (70-68-68).
Mickey DeMorat ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 72.05 season stroke average, a number bolstered by his strong play at the end of the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The senior closed the event with a 3-under par 67, his seventh sub-70 round of the year.
Gabe Lench ranks third on Liberty's roster with a 72.87 season stroke average. The junior finished tied for 27th place at the SunTrust Gator Invitational and has played seven rounds at par or better this season.
Play at the General Hackler Championship gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and live scoring will be provided by Golfstat.com.
