Darrel Jones boosted his Liberty men's indoor triple jump record to 51-0 on Sunday.
For the second time in as many meets, Liberty senior Darrel Jones broke his own program record in the men's triple jump. On Sunday, his record leap of 51-0 earned a ninth-place finish at the USATF Indoor Championships inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Jones, the only collegian among the 12-member field, recorded his record-breaking effort on his first of three attempts. It marked a slight improvement upon his 50-11.5 performance at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Feb. 3 and ranks No. 47 nationally on the NCAA Division I list.
Will Claye, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, reached 56-8.5 to claim the national title. He will be joined on Team USA at next month's IAAF World Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom by second-place Chris Carter, whose top effort measured 56-5.25.
Up Next Next up for Liberty will be the 2018 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships. For the first time in meet history, the event will take place at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, Friday and Saturday. The Liberty men's squad will be aiming for its 21st straight Big South title, while the Lady Flames are in search of their third consecutive championship.
