Liberty senior Darrel Jones will compete against some of the nation's top men's triple jumpers at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships, Sunday at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

The meet, which will determine Team USA for the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships, will run from Friday through Sunday. The men's triple jump is set to begin Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Eastern.

Scouting the Competition
Jones is the only collegiate athlete entered in Sunday's men's triple jump competition.

Will Claye headlines the 12-member field, as he has earned silver medals at each of the last two Olympic Games. Meanwhile, Omar Craddock currently ranks No. 4 in the world at 56-4.5 and Donald Scott is No. 6 in the world at 55-11.75.

What's at Stake?
The top two finishers who have hit the qualifying standard (55-11.25) will represent Team USA at the 2018 IAAF World Championships, March 1-4 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Jones is trying to use Albuquerque's thin air to propel him to a qualifying mark for the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. Jones is currently tied for No. 45 nationally at 50-11.5 and will likely need to jump over 52 feet to earn one of the 16 NCAA qualifying berths.

The Big South Conference all-time men's indoor triple jump record is 51-3.75, set by Charleston Southern's Anthony Reed on Jan. 16, 1999.

Jones' overall personal best is an outdoor mark of 51-3, achieved at the Virginia Challenge on April 21, 2017.

How He Got Here
Jones has improved his triple jumping at each of his first three meets this season, beginning with a 49-3.75 mark for third place at the Keydet Invitational (Jan. 19). The native of Monroe, N.Y., then won the Liberty Kickoff (Jan. 27) men's triple jump title at 50-3.25.

Jones' most recent competition saw him break his own program record and qualify for the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships with a 50-11.5 leap at the Feb. 3 Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. That effort garnered Jones' seventh career Big South Field Athlete of the Week honor.

Championship Experience
Jones has competed at one previous USATF meet. He closed out his freshman season by placing eighth in the men's triple jump at the 2015 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., June 27, 2015.

Jones is a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet, triple jumping at the event in 2016 and 2017.

Jones is a three-time top-four men's triple jumper at the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships, including second place in 2016, third place in 2017 and fourth place in 2015.

At the Big South Conference level, Jones is a two-time conference champion (2016 indoor triple jump, 2017 outdoor triple jump) and a seven-time All-Big South performer.

Looking Ahead
Jones will return to Lynchburg to rejoin his teammates in preparation for the 2018 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships. For the first time, the meet will be contested at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, Feb. 23-24.
