Riding a four-match winning streak, Liberty (4-3) women's tennis will head to Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday for a contest against Virginia Tech (4-0).

First serve is pegged for 11 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Series History
Liberty and Virginia Tech will be squaring off for the sixth time ever. Virginia Tech is 5-0 in the all-time series. The Hokies won the most recent meeting just over five years ago (Feb. 10, 2013), 6-1, in Blacksburg.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty junior Maria Medina and freshman Polina Miroshnichenko were named the Big South Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday by the league office. Wednesday marked the first time since 2011 that Liberty women's tennis swept the awards (BSC POW, BSC FOW).
  • The Lady Flames are on a four-match winning streak. Their last winning streak of four matches came at the end of the 2017 campaign (April 10-21). Liberty has lost just one total point on its current run.
  • Liberty earned a pair of 7-0 victories, last Sunday against Troy and Shaw. It marked the second time in program history the Lady Flames have won two matches by a score of 7-0 on the same day.
  • Senior captain Evangeline Crist recorded her 75th career singles victory, last Sunday against Troy. The senior from Georgia defeated the Trojans' Pei Ju Hsieh, 6-3, 7-6 (5). She is second all-time in program history, behind only Jordan Jenkins (87 wins, 2012-15).
  • Junior Ashley Bongart, who just celebrated a birthday on Wednesday, paces the squad with a 13-4 singles record this season, including a 4-1 mark in the spring. The Bradenton, Fla., native has won nine of those 13 matches in straight sets, and she is 8-1 in her last nine solo bouts.
  • Liberty is 25-13 (.658) in singles and 12-5 (.706) in doubles, this spring. The Lady Flames' strongest doubles unit has been junior Rebekah Anderson and freshman Grace Hashiguchi (4-0), who lead all Big South doubles tandems with a 4-0 record.
  • Five Lady Flames are currently on three-match winning streaks or greater in singles: Miroshnichenko (4), Bongart (3), Anna Dollar (3), Medina (3) and junior Lara Soares (3).

Scouting Virginia Tech
The Hokies own victories over ETSU (7-0), Appalachian State (5-2), Missouri (4-2) and Marshall (6-1) in the early going. Head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Wood's features 13 players, including four seniors.

Virginia Tech has dominated both singles and doubles competition throughout the course of the 2017-18 campaign. The Hokies are 56-4 (.933) overall in singles, including a 20-3 (.870) mark in dual competition. In doubles, they are 7-5 (.583) in the spring and 17-5 (.773) overall. Sophomore Natalie Novotna (9-1 overall, 3-1 dual) is Virginia Tech's top player, checking in at No. 34 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Women's Rankings.
