Julia DiMartino earned her fifth career Big South Pitcher of the Week honor.
Following a dominant weekend in the circle, Liberty junior Julia DiMartino has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week.
The 2017 Big South Pitcher of the Year, DiMartino earns her fifth career Pitcher of the Week honor and first since April 24, 2017. She ties Tiffani Smith (2008-11) for the most Big South Pitcher of the Week honors in program history. DiMartino is the first Liberty player to be named Big South Pitcher of the Week as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
A native of Brockport, N.Y., DiMartino went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, two shutouts, one save, 21 strikeouts, one walk and a .083 opponents' batting average in 15 innings pitched at the Dot Richardson Invitational. After one weekend, she leads the Big South in ERA, shutouts, strikeouts and opponents' batting average.
DiMartino did not allow a runner past second base at any point, yielding just four total hits. She started the weekend with a one-hit shutout in Friday's season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson. That game saw her retire the final 17 batters she faced while also striking out 10 hitters. DiMartino then struck out eight in a two-hit shutout against Chattanooga on Saturday. She came on in relief against Toledo, getting a six-out save to seal the 3-1 win over the Rockets.
The Lady Flames (5-0) return home for the Liberty Softball Challenge, held Friday and Saturday at Liberty Softball Stadium. Liberty begins play at 3 p.m. on Friday against Delaware State.
