#BEATCOASTAL is Back with Football Series in 2023 and 2024

Future Football Schedules

Flames Nation will be able to dust off its #BEATCOASTAL t-shirts in 2023 and 2024 when Liberty and Coastal Carolina renew their rivalry on the gridiron.

The two athletics departments announced a home-and-home football series earlier today. The Flames will return to Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C., on Sept. 9, 2023. The Chanticleers will come to Williams Stadium in Lynchburg on Aug. 31 to open the 2024 season.

The two programs dominated the Big South with one of the teams claiming at least a share of the conference title 11 out of 12 seasons from 2004 to 2015. Before both teams left the league to move to the FBS level, Liberty finished its time in the conference with eight Big South titles, while Coastal Carolina capture seven conference championships.

The teams squared off for 14 consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2016 with the overall series tied at 7-7. The home team has won 10 times in the previous 14 meetings. Liberty posted wins in Conway, S.C., in 2008 and 2014, while Coastal Carolina left Lynchburg with a victory in 2005 and 2013.

Just days before Christmas 2017, the Liberty University Athletics Department announced completed football schedules through the 2021 season. Today's series announcements adds to Liberty's already released additional scheduling opportunities through the 2030 season.

On Feb. 16, 2017, the NCAA approved Liberty's waiver request to begin the two-year FBS reclassification process. Liberty recently completed its final season as a FCS program in 2017, playing as a member of the Big South Conference.

During the 2018 season, Liberty will compete as a FBS independent program and will not be eligible for postseason competition. At the conclusion of the two-year transition process, Liberty will be a full-fledged FBS program in 2019, which will include the opportunity to compete for bowl game appearances.

The Flames will host their first FBS home game against Old Dominion on Sept. 1, 2018, the first of four FBS teams to visit Williams Stadium in 2018 to meet the FBS reclassification criteria. The 2018 home schedule also features FBS matchups against North Texas (Sept. 22), Troy (Oct. 13) and New Mexico State (Nov. 24).
