Ashtyn Baker is now a three-time Big South Freshman of the Week.
For the conference-high third time this season, Liberty point guard Ashtyn Baker has been named Big South Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week.
Baker, who was previously honored on Nov. 13 and Dec. 4, was recognized for her performance at the Roo Holiday Classic, Dec. 19-20 in Kansas City, Mo.
The Nesbit, Miss., native helped the Lady Flames go 1-1 at the tournament, averaging 13.5 ppg, 3.5 apg, 2.5 rpg and 1.5 spg. She committed only one turnover in 61 minutes of playing time over the two contests.
Baker played arguably the best game of her young career during an 82-69 come-from-behind win over Denver on Dec. 19. She scored 12 of her career-high 20 points in the decisive fourth quarter, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers which put the Lady Flames ahead for good. Baker also paced all players with five assists against the Pioneers.
The following day, Baker totaled seven points and came up with two steals in a 65-57 setback to Northern Colorado.
For the season, Baker ranks among the Big South's top 10 players in three categories, including assist-to-turnover ratio (third, 1.4), assists (sixth, 3.1 apg) and steals (eighth, 1.4 spg). Baker is also tied with Winthrop's Emily Kelley as the conference's leading scorer among freshmen at 8.3 ppg.
Baker and the Lady Flames (5-6) will wrap up non-conference play on Friday with a visit to No. 14/15 Duke (10-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
