2017 Men's Soccer Recap

With the 2017 men's soccer season completed, Liberty Flames Sports Network's Alan York caught up with Liberty Head Coach Jeff Alder to take a look back at the year. The Flames finished the season with a 10-6-1 overall record and finished 5-3 in Big South Conference play.

2017 Season Highlights

  • Four Flames were named to the 2017 Big South All-Conference team. For the second consecutive year, midfielder Kevin Mendoza and forward Tresor Mbuyu were selected to the conference's first team. Defender Alex Dominguez and midfielder Pepe Segarra garnered second team honors.
     
  • Liberty won 10 games for the first time since 2014 and defeated the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the Big South Quarterfinals, 3-0.
     
  • Liberty outscored its opponents, 28-19, on the year. The Flames were among the national leaders in scoring offense and goals allowed for most of the 2017 season.
     
  • The Flames tied for the Big South lead with seven shutouts.
     
  • Mendoza led the Flames with a career-high 24 points, scoring 10 goals and assisting on four others. The junior finished fifth in the conference in points.
     
  • Mbuyu compiled over 20 points for the second consecutive year. The junior netted nine goals and had four assists for 22 points, after posting 29 in 2016.
     
  • Senior Dominguez, who entered the year with one assist in three seasons, scored a goal and collected three assist in 2017.
     
  • Goalkeeper James Knoebel was one of three Flames to start all 17 games during the season. After posting a 1.63 goals against average in 2016, the redshirt sophomore lowered his GAA to 1.10. Mendoza and Segarra also started all 17.
