Liberty to Enter Big South Volleyball Championship as No. 5 Seed

Tournament Bracket

Liberty will serve as the No. 5 seed for the 2017 Big South Volleyball Championship, hosted by Radford, next Friday through Sunday at the Dedmon Center.

The Lady Flames (11-18, 8-8 Big South) will face fourth-seed UNC Asheville (13-14, 9-7), in the first quarterfinal match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that match will take on No. 1 seed High Point on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Friday's 7 p.m. match features No. 3 seed Campbell against No. 6 seed Winthrop, with the winner advancing to face second-seeded Radford, Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Lady Flames are the No. 5 seed for the fourth time, and first since 2004, when they qualified for the semifinals. In fact, Liberty made the semifinals as the fifth seed in 1991, 1996 and 2004.

Liberty and UNC Asheville split the season series this year, with Liberty winning a 3-2 match on Sept. 30 at the Vines Center, and the Bulldogs claiming a 3-1 victory on Thursday at the Justice Center.

Liberty is 7-3 all-time in Big South Tournament play against UNC Asheville, and has won the last three tournament meetings between the two teams. Most recently, the Lady Flames downed the Bulldogs, 3-1, in the 2013 Big South Volleyball Championship quarterfinal round.

Radford will be hosting the Big South Volleyball Championship for the fifth time, and first since 2009, when No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina edged second-seeded Liberty, 3-1, in the final.

The Lady Flames have won a Big South-record seven conference titles overall, with the last coming in 2012.

Defending Big South tournament champion High Point went 16-0 in conference play this season, setting a Big South record for conference wins in a single season. Tournament host Radford (13-3) earned the second seed. In fact, this is the fourth year in a row that the tournament host will be seeded second. Campbell garnered the third seed at 10-6.

UNC Asheville placed fourth in the conference standings with a 9-7 Big South record. Liberty and Winthrop finished in a tie for fifth place, at 8-8 in conference play. The teams went 1-1 in matches against each other, so the tie-breaker went to percentage of sets won in the series, which Liberty won, 5-3.

The 2017 Big South Volleyball Championship opens Friday with two quarterfinal matches, and ends with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 19. The Big South tournament champion earns an automatic qualification into the 2017 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship. Sunday's championship match will be aired live on
