Liberty Softball Adds Canetto, Griffin During Early Signing Period

Fifth-year Liberty Softball Head Coach Dot Richardson has announced the addition of two student-athletes to the Lady Flames' softball program for the 2018-19 academic year. Kara Canetto and Denay Griffin have both signed National Letters of Intent will join the Lady Flames' roster starting in the fall of 2018.

These two student-athletes join a team that won a program-record 46 games last season, while winning its first-ever postseason championship, the National Invitational Softball Championship.

"We are blessed to have an elite 2018 recruiting class which is a selective group that will have an impact on our program," Richardson said. "These young ladies have a passion to share their gifts the Lord has given them through the sport of softball at the highest level of collegiate competition.  We are excited about what God is doing here at Liberty and through all our athletic programs. LU Softball is on the rise and we welcome all to come and experience what the Lady Flames are doing on the diamond."

Kara Canetto (OF, Sylvania, Ga./Screven County HS)
Kara Canetto has had a standout high school softball career at Screven County High School in Sylvania, Ga. She is a four-time all-region player, highlighted by her junior year, when she was named 4-AA Region Player of the Year. Canetto has twice been named to the all-state team, in 2016 and 2017. As a sophomore, she hit .557 with 33 runs and 30 stolen bases, while she batted .577 with 49 runs scored, 37 RBI and 28 steals as a junior. Also a pitcher, she has averaged nearly one strikeout per inning.

"Kara is an extremely talented player who will provide speed and versatility to our program," Richardson said. "She is a multi-faceted athlete who can cover a lot of ground on defense and contribute to run production on the bases offensively." 

Denay Griffin (SS, San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis HS)
Denay Griffin comes to Liberty as a standout shortstop from San Antonio, Texas. Competing for Brandeis High School, she is a three-time all-district selection, including first team honors as a junior. She has been voted first team all-academic all three years of high school so far. Griffin has batted .300 or better all three seasons, including a career-high .386 during her junior season, in which she also won the Bronco Award.

"Denay is a power hitter on the right side of the plate," Richardson said. "She brings a lot of experience to the middle infield. We are excited to see what she will add to our veteran leadership on defense. Denay is self-motivated and a hard worker both in the classroom and on the field. In the classroom, she is stellar and brings true meaning to the name student-athlete."
