Radford-Liberty Square off in Key Big South Contest to End Regular Season

The Liberty Flames will host the Radford Highlanders in a key, regular season-ending Big South Conference match, Wednesday afternoon at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Wednesday's contest will be the last regular-season contest for both teams. The Flames and Highlanders have already qualified for the Big South Men's Soccer Championships, set to begin on Sunday. However, a win by either team on Wednesday will push them into second place in the conference standings and allow them to receive a bye into the Big South semifinals.

Liberty clinched a spot in the top of the Big South Conference, Saturday. A penalty kick by Kevin Mendoza during the 59th minute proved to be the difference, as the Flames defeated Winthrop, 1-0, at Osborne Stadium on Senior Day. The goal was Mendoza's eighth of the season.

With the victory, Liberty moves to 5-2 in Big South play and 10-4-1 overall. The Flames have won five of their last six contests.

  • Liberty has outscored its opponents, 29-12, on the year. The Flames currently lead the Big South and rank 19th nationally with a 0.783 team goals against average. Liberty also is 23rd nationally in scoring offense with a 1.93 goals per game average.
  • With their victory on Saturday, Liberty is now 7-1 at home in 2017. Meanwhile, the Flames finished their regular season with a 3-3 road mark.
  • Not only does Liberty lead the Big South in fewest goals allowed, but the Flames pace the conference in shutouts with seven.
  • Tresor Mbuyu enters the week ranked 19th nationally with a 1.53 points per game average and 26th nationally with nine goals.
  • Having eclipsed his single season career high with eight goals, Kevin Mendoza has moved among the Big South leaders in goals with eight. The midfielder is currently seventh in goals (8) and points (19).
  • Goalkeeper James Knoebel leads the Big South in both goals against average (0.81) and save percentage (.806). He ranks 27th nationally in goals against average and 25th in save percentage.

Scoring First
The Flames have scored first in 11 of their 15 contests this season. Liberty holds a 9-1-1 record in those games.

In addition, the Flames are 6-0 when leading at halftime and 3-2-1 when they are tied.

Honoring the Seniors
Before this past Saturday's match, Liberty men's soccer honored its seniors in a pregame ceremony. Liberty players Jovanni Chavez, Alex Dominguez, Brady Mazzei, Edgardo Reyes and Pepe Segarra were recognized along with manager Hunter Hudson.
