Peters and Turner Receive Big South Weekly Honors

For their efforts in Liberty's road win at Gardner-Webb, cornerback Jeremy Peters and punter Trey Turner were honored today by the Big South Conference.

Peters was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week, while Turner was selected the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week.

The pair helped the Flames snap a four-game losing streak with a 33-17 road victory at Gardner-Webb on Saturday.

Peters finished the contest with two solo tackles and intercepted Big South Preseason Player of the Year Tyrell Maxwell three times. The trio of interceptions are tied for the second best single-game total in program history and made Peters the 10th player in Big South with three interceptions in the same game.

The junior picked off Maxwell during the Runnin' Bulldogs final two drives of the game, including a 15-yard return for a score to seal Liberty's first Big South win of the season. The native of Green Cove Springs, Fla., also finished the game with three pass breakups.

Turner continually helped the Flames to win the field position battle, finishing the contest by averaging 44.2 yards per punt (five punts for 221 yards). The graduate student pinned the Runnin' Bulldogs inside their own 20-yard line with three of his five punts.

Turner is on pace to finish as Liberty's career record holder with a 40.7 career punting average. The Gardner-Webb game marked the fourth time this season and the 25th time in his career the native of Rome, Ga., has averaged 40 or more yards per punt in his four-year career.

Peters and Turner will look to keep Liberty's winning ways on track this weekend when the Flames host NEC conference leader Duquesne at Williams Stadium. The Family Weekend game kicks off at 3:30 p.m., Saturday afternoon.
