Flames Wrap Up Fall at Steelwood Invitational

Steelwood Collegiate Invitational Live Stats

A busy week of golf will see the Flames wrap up the fall portion of their 2017-18 schedule by participating in the 2017 Steelwood Collegiate Invitational.

Liberty, currently ranked No. 63 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, will play its fifth and final event of the fall when it takes to the Steelwood Country Club (par 72, 7,096 yards) on Saturday and Sunday in Loxley, Ala.

The 54-hole event is hosted by South Alabama at a course designed by 1976 U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate which opened in 1997. The course has been rated as one of the top golf courses in the state of Alabama by Golf Digest.

Earlier this week, Liberty finished in 10th place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, a two-day tournament hosted by Baylor at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas.

The Flames were in third place following 36 holes of action, but dropped down the 12-team leaderboard as they were unable to weather a blustery day that saw wind gusts up to 30 MPH.

Liberty posted a 10-over par 862 in the event (282-278-302) and was led by Isaiah Logue, who finished in 26th place with a 2-over par 215 (71-68-76). The senior's best finish of the fall lowered his season stroke average to 74.50.

Liberty will see some of the best teams in the country at this weekend's event, including the nation's No. 1 team in Alabama. The Crimson Tide have won two of the three tournaments they have participated in this fall and have three of their starting five golfers registering a sub-par scoring average this fall.

The tournament's 12-team field also features No. 8 Kentucky and No. 58 Kennesaw State. The Owls dominated this same event in 2016, finishing 25 strokes ahead of the Wildcats, with Kennesaw State posting a winning score of 25-under par 837 (278-280-279).

Senior Mickey DeMorat leads the Flames on the season, having finished top five in two of four events and posting a 71.08 season stroke average. Following a career best, second-place finish at Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate in early October, DeMorat was named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week.

Payton Taylor, who has played in two of the Flames' four fall events, ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 72.83 season stroke average.

Alexandre Fuchs (73.08) and Ervin Chang (73.17) rank third and fourth on Liberty's roster this fall. Both the underclassmen have earned Big South honors this fall. Chang was named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week on Sept. 28, while Fuchs was selected Big South Freshman of the Week on the same date.

The two-day event gets under way on Saturday for 36 holes of play with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CST). The final round of the event starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday with teams being sent off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
