Liberty University Invitational Draws

The Liberty Flames men's tennis team will open its 2017-18 campaign by hosting the Liberty University Invitational, Friday through Sunday at the Cook Tennis Center.

The three-day invitational features seven teams: Liberty, Campbell, VCU, Richmond, Charlotte, Presbyterian and Longwood.

"We are excited to compete on our home courts. It is a strong field, including four Big South teams represented," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt. "We will be tested, and that is exactly what we are looking for."

The Liberty University Invitational will feature a compass draw. Competition will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. Saturday's action will commence at 9 a.m., and Sunday's final day of play will kick off at noon. Each day will begin with doubles play.

The Flames' current roster features one freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and a senior. Senior Diego Castano is Liberty's most experienced player, having compiled 49 career singles victories in his first three seasons, which ranks eighth most in program history.

Sophomore Chase Burton will be looking to improve on a successful freshman season that saw him garner recognition on the Big South Conference First Team All-Conference singles list. Burton also earned inclusion on the VaSID All-State Men's Tennis singles second team, the first Flames freshman in program history to garner the distinction.

Juniors Eddie Gutierrez, Max Borcuti and Alex Poynter are back for their third seasons in a Liberty uniform. Sophomore Vince Salas placed second on the squad in singles victories and tied for second in doubles wins during the 2016-17 academic year.

Finally, freshman Sebastian Mermersky joins the team, this season. The Washington, D.C., native, enjoyed a successful junior tennis career, which included six titles at the junior ITF level.
