Kainah Williams scored a career-high 11 kills on Friday at UNCW.
UNCW edged Liberty, 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 26-24) in a spirited four-set match, Friday at Trask Coliseum.
UNCW moves to 4-6 on the season with the win, while Liberty falls to 2-9 following its third straight setback. Both teams will face Western Michigan (6-3) and Morgan State (1-10) tomorrow.
For the match, the Seahawks outhit the Lady Flames, .204-.120, while posting 13 blocks to 9.5 for Liberty. The guests led, 62-53, in digs while UNCW won the aces battle, 5-2.
UNCW's Brynn Montgomery led all players with 14 kills while adding 20 assists and nine digs. Halle Hunt recorded 10 kills and 10 digs, while Maddy Kline registered 10 kills. Katie McCullough collected 14 digs, while Anna Moss posted nine blocks.
Kainah Williams led Liberty with a career-high 11 kills and four blocks. Anna Gragg and Casey Goodwin chipped in with 10 kills apiece. Amaya Williams registered a double-double, dishing out a career-high 40 assists to go with 10 digs. Margaret Latchford collected 14 digs, while Victoria Baptista totaled 12 digs. Latchford is now ranked 19th in program history with 1,019 career digs.
UNCW led set one, 20-16, following Montgomery's fifth kill. After a Liberty timeout, the Seahawks pushed their lead to 23-19 on another Montgomery kill. Goodwin scored a pair of kills late, but Hunt clinched the set, 25-21, with a kill.
The opening set saw UNCW outhit Liberty, .227-.103. Montgomery sent down six kills for UNCW, while Goodwin responded with four kills.
Liberty faced a late 19-18 deficit in the second set, before Kainah Williams and Goodwin scored back-to-back and combined on a block to make it 21-19, Lady Flames. After five sideouts, Amaya Williams and Jenna Culhan sent down consecutive kills to seal set two for Liberty, 25-22.
The guests hit .268 in set two, led by Kainah Williams (7-0-7) and Anna Gragg (6-1-8). The Lady Flames also posted 4.5 set-two blocks.
The Seahawks raced out to a 19-9 advantage in set see, with Montgomery scoring a kill to cap the rally. Liberty trimmed the deficit to 19-15 with a six-point burst, capped by a Baptista kill. UNCW responded, outscoring Liberty, 5-1, down the stretch to win, 25-17.
Set three saw UNCW outhit Liberty, .321-.103 while also leading in blocks, 4-3.
UNCW turned an 18-16 set-four deficit into a 20-18 lead via a four-point rally. Liberty battled back into a tie, 21-21, as Jenna Culhan scored three kills. Kline gave UNCW a 23-22 advantage with a kill. Back-to-back Liberty blocks made it 24-23, Lady Flames. Hunt then sent down back-to-back kills, before the Seahawks sealed the match with a block, prevailing, 26-24, in set four.
The host Seahawks hit .150 in set four, posting six blocks to help hold Liberty to a .000 hitting percentage. Culhan scored six kills for Liberty in the fourth session.
Liberty competes twice tomorrow, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. match against Western Michigan. The Lady Flames will close out the weekend by taking on Morgan State at 4:30 p.m., tomorrow.
