Game Day Central: Morehead State
Coming off of a history-making 48-45 win at Baylor, No. 20/NR Liberty will open its home schedule against a Pioneer Football League foe for the second straight season, facing fellow 1-0 squad Morehead State.
"4 Downs" with the eagles
1. Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting between Liberty and Morehead State since Oct. 5, 1991. The two teams squared off eight times between 1980 and 1991 but have not matched up with each other in 26 years. The Flames have faced one prior Pioneer Football League opponent. Liberty defeated Jacksonville 55-7 in last season's home opener, Sept. 10, 2016 at Williams Stadium.
2. Liberty and Morehead State both used high-powered offenses to fuel season-opening wins. The Flames racked up 585 yards in a 48-45 victory at Baylor, while the Eagles finished with 625 yards in a 56-14 triumph over Kentucky Christian. Both teams are seeking their first 2-0 start to a season in a while. Liberty has not won its first two games since 2010, while Morehead State's most recent 2-0 beginning came in 2007.
3. Phil Simms is the Eagles' most accomplished football alum, earning MVP honors of Super Bowl XXI and two Pro Bowl appearances during his long career as New York Giants quarterback. Simms' final year at Morehead State (1978) came two years before the Eagles' first meeting with Liberty in 1980. Morehead State's 2017 roster features three Virginia natives, in Josh Hall (Hampton), Kirk Peterson (Woodbridge) and Nicholas Shaw (Arlington). Liberty's Ceneca Espinoza, Jr. also hails from Arlington, but he graduated from Washington & Lee High School while Shaw graduated from Bishop O'Connell.
4. Morehead State has made four previous visits to Liberty, but Saturday will mark just its second game at Williams Stadium. The Eagles dropped a 42-13 decision on Sept. 22, 1990 in the Flames' sixth contest played at the facility.
