On the day of the Liberty volleyball team's annual Blue-White Scrimmage, LFSN reporter Alan York caught up with Head Coach Shane Pinder, along with junior Margaret Latchford.
The Lady Flames enter the season with a 17-member roster, consisting of nine returnees and eight newcomers (six freshmen, two transfers). Liberty went 16-13 last season, including 11-5 in Big South play. The team staged an eight-match winning streak during conference play, one which saw the Lady Flames go 5-0 in five-set matches. Liberty led the Big South with 2.45 blocks per set in 2016, while holding opponents to a .169 opponents' hitting percentage.
Pinder enters his 14th season as head coach at Liberty. The winningest volleyball coach in school history, Pinder is ranked second all-time in Big South history with 238 career coaching victories. He needs just 11 more Big South victories to earn the most conference regular-season wins of any volleyball coach.
Latchford enters her junior year with multiple accolades to her credit. As a freshman in 2015, she set a program freshman record with 502 digs. That same season, on Oct. 2, 2015, she collected a program rally-scoring-record 38 digs at Campbell. Her 876 career digs are the most by any Lady Flame in her first two seasons at Liberty.
Today's scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m. at the Vines Center, with admission free and open to the public. The roster will be evenly split between two sides, Blue team and White team, for an intrasquad scrimmage.
Following the Blue-White Scrimmage, Liberty will open its regular-season schedule on Friday at 4 p.m., with a match against Villanova held in Charlottesville, Va., as part of the Cavalier Classic. The Lady Flames will then take on the host Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday at noon before facing Hofstra, Saturday at 4:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.
