Corbin Named National Player of the Week

One day after winning her second-consecutive Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week distinction, Liberty sophomore setter Kallie Corbin has garnered another piece of hardware. She has been tabbed the Collegiate Volleyball Update ( National Player of the Week, for Oct. 22 through Oct. 28.

Corbin (Beaverton, Ore.) is the first Big South player to earn the national award this season and is one of only three setters to do so. Her recognition comes on the heels of a week of milestones for the Lady Flames. The Lady Flames won a trio of 3-0 sweeps, including one which snapped Winthrop's 63-match Big South winning streak. Liberty, the current Big South leader, has now recorded a school-record 10 sweeps in a row and has claimed its first 20-win season since 2003.

For the week, Corbin hit a team-high .429 with 15 kills, 128 assists, four aces, 26 digs and eight blocks. She leads the Big South Conference and ranks No. 39 nationally with 12.48 assists per game on the season. The Oregon native also leads the conference with nine 50-assist performances and sits fifth with 0.37 service aces per game.

Among Big South setters, Corbin ranks first in kills (1.35 kpg), attack percentage (.258), digs (3.11 dpg) and blocks (0.57 bpg), and is listed second in service aces.

The Lady Flames' week started with a sweep of Norfolk State, Tuesday evening at the Vines Center. Corbin hit .667, with five kills and 38 assists against the Spartans.

High Point entered the Vines Center on a 10-match winning streak Friday evening, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Liberty. This time around, Corbin helped ignite her team by hitting 1.000 with three kills, 20 assists and five digs during the opening stanza. She finished the contest with her 13th double-double of the year, which consisted of 50 assists and 14 digs.

Liberty closed out the week with a bang, handing Winthrop its first conference loss since 2003, in front of a Big South-record 1,583 fans at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames posted the highest attack percentage (.245) by a Big South team against the Eagles, so far this season. Corbin directed the Liberty offense with 40 assists, and also provided five kills, seven digs and four blocks.

Corbin has been recognized a number of times during the current season. The three-time Big South Player of the Week garnered all-tournament recognition at each of Liberty's four season-opening tournaments (Liberty Invitational Presented by Pepsi, VCU 3rd Degree Sportswear Invitational, Wright State Raider Challenge and Villanova Classic). She was voted MVP of the Liberty Invitational Presented by Pepsi, after helping Liberty to a second-place finish at the event.

The Lady Flames will take to the road for a pair of matches this weekend. Liberty will open the trip with a Friday tilt at future Big South member Presbyterian, at 7 p.m.
