With Liberty's football training camp now under way, LibertyFlames.com continues is annual position preview segments today by looking at the Flames' linebackers.
Liberty's middle line of defense will look different in 2017 following the graduation of Nick Newman and Dexter Robbins. The pair combined to record 140 tackles last season, ranking second and third on Liberty's total tackles listing.
The player who finished directly behind Liberty's two all-conference linebackers was Solomon McGinty, who recorded 52 tackles (31 solo, 21 assisted) during his first season on Liberty Mountain. The Tyler Junior College transfer played in a quasi-linebacker roll in 2016 at the SPUR position, but he will move full time to the position in 2017 as he is slated to start at middle linebacker.
Redshirt juniors Lucas Irons (27 tackles) and David King (four tackles), along with redshirt sophomore Jaylyn McKinney (20 tackles) will look to battle for the starting job at weak side linebacker and add depth to the entire linebacker position.
On the practice field today, Liberty worked out in full pads for the third day in a row on the Williams Stadium playing surface instead of practicing inside its new indoor football practice facility. Liberty will have two lighter practices this week in half pads on Thursday and Friday before holding its third scrimmage of August on Saturday.
