After leading the Flames to another NCAA Regional appearance and a top-50 final ranking, Flames Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Thomas recently recapped the season with LFSN reporter Nick Pierce.
Liberty finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 49 in the final Golfstat national rankings, spending each week of the season in the top-50 national rankings. The Flames spotlighted the run with a No. 22 ranking on Oct. 22.
Following a second-place finish at the 2017 Big South Men's Golf Championship, the Flames earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Regional. Liberty was the No. 8 seed at the NCAA Austin Regional, which was contested at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,355 yards) in Austin, Texas, May 15-17.
The Flames finished the NCAA Austin Regional tied for 11th place with a 27-over par 879 (294-305-280), sharing 11th place with No. 10 seed Georgia Southern (295-292-292).
The 11th-place finish wrapped Liberty's 2016-17 season which saw the Flames advance to NCAA Regional play for the sixth time in the last seven years. Liberty earned its fourth at-large bid into NCAA Regional play (2003, 2006, 2013 and 2017), the most at-large selections of any athletics program at Liberty in the Division I era.
Four of Liberty's five starters earned All-Big South honors during the 2016-17 season (Mickey DeMorat, Gabe Lench, Isaiah Logue and Kieran Vincent). Vincent was named the Big South Freshman of the Year, while Logue was selected to the PING All-Region team for the second consecutive season.
